Healthy Movement Series – Class for Healthy Spine
Common Back Injuries – Common back injuries include sprains and strains (muscle and ligament injuries), herniated discs, fractured vertebrae, spondylolisthesis (vertebra slipping), and spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal canal).
Sprains and Strains
Sprain: Occurs when ligaments (tough tissues connecting bones) are stretched or torn.
Strain: Occurs when muscles or tendons (tissues connecting muscles to bones) are stretched or torn.
Symptoms: pain, swelling, muscle spasms, and limited mobility.
Herniated Discs – The discs between the vertebrae (bones of the spine) can bulge or rupture, putting pressure on nerves.
Symptoms: Pain, numbness, or tingling in the back, arms, or legs.
Spondylolisthesis – One vertebra slips out of place over the vertebra below it.
Symptoms: Back pain, stiffness, and numbness or tingling in the legs or feet.
Spinal Stenosis: Narrowing of the spinal canal, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.
Symptoms: Back pain, numbness, and weakness in the legs and feet.
Other Common Back Injuries:
Degenerative Disc Disease: Deterioration of the discs between the vertebrae, leading to pain and stiffness.
Scoliosis: A sideways curvature of the spine.
Spinal Cord Compression: Pressure on the spinal cord, which can cause pain, weakness, and loss of function.
Radiculopathy: Nerve compression or irritation, leading to pain, numbness, or tingling.
Facet Arthritis: Arthritis in the joints that connect the vertebrae.
