Bodyworkers of all kinds are invited to these anatomy classes.  Slides, lecture, and open discussion will be the format.  Each class will provide 7 hours of Continuing Education credit through NCBTMB.

These will not be the typical academic anatomy classes, which stress the memorization of individual muscles, origins and insertions, kinetic actions of individual muscles, and agonist/antagonist functional relationships.

These classes will focus instead on the broad, synergistic relationships of muscle fibers distributed among many muscle bellies over wide areas that must coordinate together to produce any posture or movement.  The description of these complex distributions of synergistic muscle fibers and their coordinated actions offer a far more complete and accurate understanding of muscular activities and their roles in posture and movement than do the usual textbook models.

The fourth dimension of anatomy is is synergistic movement.  The body moves both in the three dimensions of space and in the dimension of time.  Our relationships with our bodies continually define our place in the space/time continuum, every posture and movement generating floods of sensations that inform our minds about our bodies in motion, and in turn orients us toward all future movements.  Changing dysfunctional habits of posture and movement that restrict our possibilities and create pain and limitations in our lives is the essence of all movement therapy and education.  These are our movements forward in the four dimensions of our lives.

In addition to anatomy in four dimensions, the following topics will be presented:

The Connective Tissue System, and its roles in the mechanical and energetic transmission of muscular forces throughout the body.
The Gamma Motor System, and its roles in reflexes, overall control of muscular movements, and new motor learning.

These more complete perspectives are the fruit of more than forty years of Deane’s experience as a movement therapist and instructor.  They will offer the foundation for a comprehensive appreciation of the kaleidoscopic and constantly shifting values of tone, length and resistance of the sensorimotor system in movement.  The predominant theme will be the role of the whole mind and its entire history of experience in muscular patterns and motor learning.
